I am especially grateful to Marilyn Gaull for her expert guidance and for her support of this project and to my colleague Janine Utell for reading and commenting on the manuscript.

Only one small mistake on the back cover that I failed to catch and correct: I am not the editor of The Works of Mary Robinson, only the editor of the poetry (volumes 1 and 2). William Brewer is the general editor of the complete edition, and I want to thank Bill here (as I do in the book) for getting me back into the Mary Robinson business. See Pickering and Chatto’s Mary Robinson page.
